The sky stands on pillars of light?

In certain cold areas it is possible to admire a luminous show of rare beauty.

The ancient Greeks thought that the titan Atlas was the pillar of the world, the one who carried it on his shoulders. The fact that the celestial vault rests on something sometimes finds its justification in nature, even if only poetic.

There is, for example, a natural phenomenon called Light pillars, common in the Arctic and in very cold areas, which shows our eyes rays that seemed to come from the ground, from different points, and stand out upwards, like luminous columns.

Waking up at dawn and being in front of such a show can leave you stunned, as has recently happened in Ontario, Canada, where phenomena of this type are not so common. The glance is that of a horizon, still wrapped in the darkness of the night, split by dozens of colorful, sparkling and moving beams of light.

Light pillars are an optical phenomenon favored by very low temperatures, we speak of several degrees below zero. They can only be seen when the atmosphere is filled with flat, hexagon-shaped ice crystals which, due to their concentration, make up a gigantic mirror, reflecting the light that hits them downwards or upwards. As they float in the air, these crystals tend to orient themselves horizontally, and the size and visibility of a pillar depend on their alignment, as does the intensity of the rainbow created.

The sky does not need columns to support itself, but seeing these unusual pillars of light flashing in the sky right in front of the house, a few hours before dawn, is a sight that leaves you speechless.
