The obsession for the screen light

At the Amsterdam Light Festival, the installation that represent this new addiction.

Watching and rewatching the screen without being able to do without it. The illumination of the digital display catches our attention is additive, like an obsessive worm that we have in our head and that we cannot (want?) get rid of.

The Internet Addiction Disorder has become an interesting theme also in the design world, like something characteristic of our time society. On occasion of the last Amsterdam Light Festival (the theme was ‘the medium is the message’), it has appeared in the heart of the neterlands capital some light’s sculpture, realized by the Design Bridge company in collaboration with the britannic artist Gali May Lucas.

These bright figures, called ‘Absorbed by Light’, installed outside the Hermitage, they want represents our continuous attraction to the screen that illuminated our lives. However, this light that provides us with information, social updates and short messages at every moment takes us away from the ‘real’ world, the tangible one.

On a bench, three persons’ figures are set down one next to the other in the poses and the typical positions of who is interacting with own smartphone. Their head is bent, the fingers type and scroll on the screen, the faces shine in the reflected light. Their body are phisically present, but their mind are elsewhere.

Every year, for the Amsterdam Light Festival 30 new sculptures and installations brighthing the city’s streets during the months of december and january.
