LIGHTING AS AN ENERGY-SAVING TOOL

Dimming the lights and selecting the color of the light are two ways to make an important impact on energy consumption, in a simple way.

Lighting plays a crucial role not only in the ambience and atmosphere of a room, for its usefulness, but also in the energy consumption of a home or office.

When we talk about saving energy, we are used to considering only light sources, and switching to LED seems to be the only feature we can act on.

One of the simplest, but often overlooked, techniques for reducing energy consumption, however, is dimming lights.

Dimming the light is not just a matter of atmosphere

Each bulb has a maximum wattage, in terms of watts, that it uses when set to its maximum brightness. However, by reducing the brightness, significant energy savings can be achieved.

For example, decreasing the brightness of a bulb to 70% of its maximum capacity can reduce its energy consumption by up to 51%. Even slight dimming, such as bringing the bulb down to 90% of its brightness, can reduce energy consumption by 19%.

This not only results in lower energy bills, but also contributes to a more sustainable use of resources, emphasizing how small changes in daily habits can have a significant impact on the environment.

The effect of colors on energy efficiency

The color of lighting also has a direct impact on energy consumption. While many may think of white as the standard color for lighting, other colors may actually be more energy efficient.

Blue is the most efficient color; in fact, it consumes considerably less energy than other shades. It is not the cold or bluish white that you might get from standard white light, but a deep, rich blue.

In addition to blue, other colors such as red, green, magenta, cyan and yellow also prove to be energy-efficient.

By integrating these colors into your lighting choices, you can not only create a unique and eye-catching environment, but also contribute to more sustainable energy use by combining aesthetics and ecological responsibility.
